This delicate song is super effective with the addition of small battery-operated candles. It works for Remembrance Day or Veterans Day programs as well as any time a song about peace is the order of the day. Alternate snowflake lyrics are also provided creating even more versatility.

Each song in this collection has its own story of how it came to be written and when it was first used. Overall, this collection is a result of many years of presenting concert programs with my elementary school students. I LOVE planning concerts that are fun for the children to sing and enjoyable for family and friends who attend the performance. Over the years I have needed songs for my youngest students to sing. By writing my own songs I have ensured that they meet the very specific set of criteria that I feel is required to make them worth singing and that help ensure their success. It was fun to put some of these songs together in a collection that I know will help music teachers with their concert planning process. There is no need to reinvent the wheel! I am happy to share these songs and imagine all the smiling faces as kids sing them and make musical memories of their own.

See the Snowflakes Falling
A second set of lyrics using the same melody, allows the focus of the song to centre around snowflakes rather than candles.

Having a double set of lyrics makes this simple song a versatile repertoire option for vocal studio recitals and school concerts featuring young singers. Both options are suitable for seasonal concerts, and at time of year.

This melody is written with simple quarter note and half note rhythms with stepwise movement between notes. The range of the melody stays within a sixth, from D4-B4, a comfortable, natural range for young singers.

The ABA form of the song helps create length while keeping the lyric load manageable for young singers. The one-verse song is the opening A section. The B section is an 8-bar instrumental break giving singers a chance to re-focus and prepare to sing the verse again for the closing A section. A small battery-operated candle can be lit during the 8-bar instrumental break for an effective visual addition to the performance. Alternatively, a snowflake prop can be included.

See my Little Candle / See the Snowflakes Falling

I was thinking about school Christmas concerts. This is not an unusual activity for me, considering my career as an elementary music teacher. What was unusual is the fact that I was doing this thinking six years after I had retired! This thought process was tweaked after a conversation I had with a teaching colleague about their upcoming December concert season. We talked specifically about songs for the “Littles” that are such an important part of every school concert.

The next morning I was lying in bed, enjoying comfy, warm blankets and a bit of cool air coming in from an open window. I started thinking about snow and the first lines of the song came to my mind. The tune arrived at the same time as the lyrics “See the snowflakes falling, drifting down like a comfy blanket covering the ground.” This thought was enough to inspire me to grab a pen and paper (always kept nearby for just an occasion) and I jotted down my idea using solfege and simple rhythm notation. I have used these tools for a LONG time!

When I got up, I started working on crafting the song. I knew I wanted it to be simple and easy for children to sing who were new to school and perhaps heading into their first school concert. I created four lines of poetry that worked for me, adjusted the melody and, within a short time, I had a new song.

Andy and I had been working on updating a resource list of winter and Christmas songs I have written. Many schools have gone to winter concerts and my song list reflects this shift with many of my songs written on the topic of snow. I thought that my gentle melody was also quite suited to a candle theme and that might be a nice change from snow, so I set about writing alternate candle lyrics. It was a marketing decision to publish this song as “See My Little Candle” with the alternate lyrics being “See the Snowflakes Falling”. The candle title might help the song stick out more rather than it getting lost in a blizzard of snow songs, and either version works for Littles to sing.

This song has a simple melody, but it has a nice feel to it. I think the plaintive, innocent quality of the song makes it a lovely addition to repertoire for young singers – whether they are singing about candles or snow. It makes me (almost) wish I had a school Christmas concert to plan and present with a bunch of kids!

The lyrics are repetitive and draw on vocabulary that is easily accessible for early French immersion students or Kindergarten Francophone singers.

The melody is written with a narrow range, from E4-C5 with most of the melody falling in the lower part of that range. Repeated notes and step-wise movement makes the melody very accessible for young singers. The song has a cheery vibe with the accompaniment supporting the swung eighth notes of the melody.

The song is written with three verses, however, the lyrics are very repetitious with similar phrases used in each verse. Suggested actions are provided which help singers remember what lyrics to sing. In addition, there are instrumental breaks after each verse giving singers a break and the opportunity to use their audiation/inner hearing skills as they do the actions without singing. This also creates a longer performance experience without overloading the singers with lyrics to learn.

Initiate a discussion about snow.
Ask the students questions about snow to connect the song content with familiar experiences. Be prepared for lots of stories!
French language/vocabulary exploration

Identify and explain any unfamiliar vocabulary.

The teacher should model the pronunciation by singing the song and adding actions to assist students’ understanding of what the story is about.

Sing the song several times and have students listen for specific words. Asking them to raise their hand every time they hear a specific word helps them focus and listen carefully.


Add actions

Add actions to the words “qui tombe, tombe, tombe.”       

Actions help students remember the lyrics and keep them “on track.”


Reviewing the song

Help students practice the words by including activities that can seem like a game.

  • Can any student remember the first words of the song?
  • Show the students the actions for one of the verses and ask if anyone knows which verse of the song is being presented.
  • Sing the song for the students and stop in specific spots and ask the students to provide the next word in the song.
Concert performance

Include Regardez la neige in a concert or recital.

Add a few costume items such as a scarf or mittens.

Include the actions learned in the music classroom or vocal studio to help young singers remember the lyrics for each verse. Actions also add visual interest for the audience.

Regardez la neige

I taught elementary music in a school that offered a French immersion program in addition to the regular English classes. Half of the classes I taught (from Kindergarten to grade 6) were French immersion students. I conducted my classes in English, but for concerts I would always try to include songs that were either a mix of French and English or totally in French. It was always a challenge to find French songs that were musically at the right level for my students and without overly difficult lyrics for both them and for me. We had a few songs that worked for the older students but finding songs for young singers who are also in the first year of French immersion was a tough task.

I started writing simple French songs for my Kindergarten to grade 2 students. It was a pretty good fit with their French skills and vocabulary being similar to mine. We both needed lots of repetitious words and easy vocabulary. Simple actions helped to keep us on track. When I started publishing my songs, I would get requests from anglophone music teachers with teaching assignments requiring French songs for immersion students for concert performances. I was glad to share my simple French songs with my teaching colleagues.

When I retired, I thought I had pretty much finished writing French songs. With all the song ideas I had rolling around in my head and written down in notebooks, I didn’t need to look for any new challenges by writing in French. However, as often happens, someone asked me for a simple French song and she had already sung ALL of the French songs I had to offer. So with that request and a reason to write, I pulled out a piece of paper and started jotting down some simple ideas. The result was Regardez la neige. It was a bit strange for me to write this without trying it out in my own classroom, but the teacher for whom I wrote it and other teaching colleagues have helped with the “workshopping” to hone this song so it could take its place in school concerts and vocal studios using French repertoire for their young singers.

Have a discussion about activities the students enjoy doing when it snows.

Has anyone ever tried to catch a snowflake on their tongue?

Do they get together with friends to enjoy outdoor activities?

Expressive singing

This song tells a story about enjoying a snowy day with friends. Use dynamics, facial expression and clear diction to sing expressively as you present this story to your audience.

Syncopation

The melody has a syncopated feel to it because many phrases begin with a rest on beat one. Beat one is usually a stronger sounding beat and the rest shifts the accent to land on beat two. This shifting of the accent creates a syncopated feeling.

To practice this syncopation, clap or stamp on beat one to create the space of the rest. Once you are comfortable with how it feels to start the phrases on beat two, leave out the clap or stamp.

Study the score to find the following elements and discuss how they work in the song:

Fluffy Flakes of Snow

I was driving to my mom’s house, an hour away from where I live. I was thinking it would be nice to have a new winter song for the lower elementary grades to sing so I was trying to think of a simple song as I was driving. Being in a vehicle with the monotony of the tire noise is a good time to block out the world and think about song ideas. However, this particular day everything I tried out for ideas seemed too contrived or too uninteresting and I arrived at my destination without any new songs to show for my efforts.

The next morning when I got up, I was humming to myself and this perky little tune was what “came out”. I grabbed paper and a pen and jotted down the tune and the words for the first line, “Lots of flakes of snow are falling.” I discussed my new song with Andy (as I often do) and we bounced a few lyric ideas around to find alternate words to describe the flakes of snow. We settled on “fluffy flakes” because the alliterations are such fun to sing! Although my original intention was a song for the youngest elementary students, this song is really a grade 2-3 level or higher, but when a song is being delivered by the muse, one does not quibble about such details!

I added the second “verse” lyrics as we were editing the score to be uploaded and published. I was wondering how to explain to the singers the reasoning behind singing exactly the same words twice, so by adding one small change, I had a reason for that repeat. It won’t be hard for the singers to learn one additional line and they will have a two-verse song.

Expressive singing

Sing expressively to create a different presentation style for each of the types of weather about which you are singing.

Emphasize the lyrics by using:

  • dynamics
  • clear diction
  • facial movement
  • simple gestures

Improvisation

There are instrumental breaks between each verse (bars 29-40).

Have students use these instrumental bars to improvise using their own musical ideas.

Students may sing specific words e.g., rain, sun, wind, etc. or sing scat syllables.

There is also the option to skip these bars (tracks are provided to accommodate both options).


Be a composer

Create your own verses for this song.

As a composer you will make musical decisions about the content of your song lyrics.

You may decide to sing about your favourite kind of weather, or you may want to take the opportunity to complain a bit about your least favourite kind of weather.

Will you still decide to present the message that it won’t help to be grumpy, or will you create a different message for your weather song?

Composer's Notes

Get Up in the Mornin'

I was taking my son to a Scout Jamboree in Cavendish, Prince Edward Island, Canada. 14,000 Scouts from all over Canada were converging at a massive camp site for a week-long event. As we were heading to the camp on a bright and sunny day, the melody and the first verse of the song popped into my head. I started to sing as we walked from the parking lot to the central gathering location (it was quite a hike so I had some time!) My son has camped in some pretty uncomfortable weather conditions. He always had lots of stories to tell, but he really didn’t complain about the weather. He seemed to enjoy the challenge of surviving even rainy and snowy camping trips. He didn’t get that from his mother. I prefer to be protected from heat, cold, bugs and hard ground when I sleep. Despite my personal preference to avoid being involved in bad weather, I thought it made sense to include the advice not to be saucy to Mother Nature. At the end of the day, being grumpy doesn’t change the weather conditions but a good attitude can go a long way to improving the outlook of the situation.

A few years later, our Donna & Andy duo was invited to sing at a Christmas event. We were practicing some standard seasonal tunes when we started to change the lyrics of Get Up in the Mornin’ to fit in with getting up on Christmas morning. We sketched out alternate lyrics that worked for that concert and I include them with the original words so teachers can have an option for school and vocal studio Christmas concert presentations. The admonishment not to be grumpy or sassy also works in the context of staying off the naughty list!

With boots (galoshes!), an umbrella, and a good attitude, even a rainy day can be full of fun.

Singers are instructed to swing the eighths as they present this jaunty melody with its positive message. A brief reference to the children’s chant “Rain Rain Go Away” and some nonsense syllables are all part of the charm of this composition.

The melody is rhythmically interesting while being accessible for young singers in grades 4-5, ages 9-11. The melody stays mainly within a one-octave vocal range from C4-C5 except for a few stretches to notes in the upper range (D5) and the option to sing a bright and dramatic F5 as a flourish on the final note of the song.

Splashing in the Puddles was originally written as a simple call and response, 2-part song for Donna’s elementary school choir. It has also been adapted into a solo/unison version without the call and response echoes so everyone can have fun singing this optimistic rainy-day song. Both the unison and 2-part arrangements are included in this download package.

Teaching tips

Score study

Discuss what it means to “swing the eighths”. Find examples of two eighth notes that are affected by this directive.

Find bars in the score where the rhythm of the melody is syncopated. The eighth note on the second half of beat three is tied to the fourth beat of the bar. Accenting the second half of beat three gives the feeling of “arriving early” on the final word in the bar.

Expressive singing

Determine spots where a breath will need to be quick and where longer space is available. Longer phrases require breath energy to be conserved. Some phrases will need a quick breath that supports the phrase without making it sound disjointed.

Use clear diction, dynamics and subtle facial and/or hand movements to sing this song expressively.

The overall feeling of the song is optimistic and cheery.

Props

An umbrella, or a pair of boots can be a fun prop to add to a performance of “Splashing in the Puddles”. Be sure that your props enhance the performance without being too distracting.

Composer's Notes

I like finding ways of presenting points of view that might be a bit thought provoking. I also tend to be someone who looks at things with an optimistic “glass half full” kind of attitude. Many times we are inclined to observe a rainy day as dismal and a disappointment. But what if you had a pair of boots, a raincoat, and an umbrella ready to use on such a day? Suddenly the prospect of a rainy day has lots of potential for interesting activities like splashing in puddles, running through the raindrops without getting wet, and enjoying that rain! I also thought about how we like cooling off on a hot summer day by going for a swim. But what’s the difference if we get wet by jumping in the lake or if we get wet by letting the rain fall on us?

A jaunty, swinging melody seemed appropriate for these rainy-day musings. I even threw in a reference to the phrase “rain come back some other day” that every child knows from the children’s chant, Rain, Rain Go Away.  This was a fun song to write and my students enjoyed singing it as a call and response song. In later years, when more voice students started using my songs, it seemed like a good idea to create a version that could be sung as a solo. This song is a celebration of what kids know and what adults sometimes forget. Playing in the rain can be fun, and after all, that IS what rubber boots are for…… isn’t it?

The song progresses with a contrasting minor section creating musical tension as the robin wages its tug of war with the worms.

The melody is written within the range of C4-D5, giving young singers brief opportunities to reach the top and bottom of their range, without staying for extended time in these outer limits. The ABA form of the song includes a 4-bar foray into minor tonality in the B section. The melody is rhythmically simple with mostly quarter and eighth notes and a few dotted quarter/eighth note combinations creating rhythmic interest.

A Robin’s Tale is a lovely solo for singers age 9 and under or for classroom singers in grades 2-3. The minor tonality of the B section is brief and is a short introduction to this tone colour for young singers.

Pre-singing discussion connects students’ interest to the song content. Questions may include:

How do you think they know where the worms are? Do they hear the worms? Do they feel the vibration with their feet? (Both would be amazing skills!)

Do you have a favourite bird?

Score Study

Dotted quarter note/eighth note combinations.

The melody of A Robin’s Tale is written with dotted quarter note/eighth note combinations.

While the teacher sings the song, have the students listen and follow the score.

Find all the bars where there are dotted quarter note/eighth note combinations.

Have students tap or clap the rhythm of the song as the teacher sings one more time.

Have half the students sing the song and the other half tap the rhythm. Switch.

Phrases

Listen for phrases that are the same or almost the same. Finding these similar phrases helps when learning the melody of the song.

Major/minor tonality

The B section of A Robin’s Tale is written in a minor key for a few short bars. Find the bars that are written in the minor key. Where does the melody return to the major tonality?

Expressive Singing

Use good breath energy to sing the long, legato phrases.

Breath marks show where the singer will take a breath even thought the notes look like there is no spot to breathe. Take as much time as needed to take a comfortable breath.

How will you sing differently to create a contrast in the B section when the melody is written in the minor key?

Use clear diction so the story can be understood.

Add dynamics to create musical interest and highlight the lyrics as part of your expressive performance.

Composer's Notes

I enjoy watching the birds in my backyard. A bird feeder of seeds encourages certain birds to make regular visits. Robins don’t frequent the feeder. They prefer worms and stay on the lawn to forage for their snacks. The robins hop from spot to spot. It is interesting to watch the tug-of-war that ensues when they locate a worm and try to pull it from its hiding spot. Because they eat worms and grubs, robins leave Canada to go to warmer climates for the winter. We know spring has arrived when they show up again. A Robin’s Tale was written as I watched this vignette playing out in the backyard. Andy and I worked on the words together and we ended up with this short song for young singers.

Rain can be enjoyable when one is able to stay dry. With an umbrella close at hand, sometimes it is hard to wait until a rainy day!

Simple rhythms are used within the 3/4 time melody of this two-verse song. Its melody is written using mostly step-wise motion with one dramatic octave jump at the end of each verse, while the melody fits within a one-octave range. The phrases are written in ABAC form providing repeated phrases which assist young singers as they learn both the melody and the lyrics. The range falls within D4-D5, briefly reaching to the upper and lower areas of the range. An 8-beat instrumental break is built into the middle of each verse, providing young singers time to catch a breath and refocus for the second half of the verse.

Introducing the song


     Discus:

  • who likes to play in the rain, in puddles, or to walk with an umbrella in the rain?
  • Who has an umbrella, a raincoat or rain boots? How do these things add to the enjoyment of being outside in the rain?
  • Who looks forward to a rainy day?

Expressive singing

  • Read the lyrics aloud. Decide which words need to be accentuated to sing expressively and convey the sentiment of the song.

 Score study

  • Using the printed music, read and/or clap the rhythm.
  • Find bars/phrases that use the same melodic pattern. The overall form of the song is ABAC.
  • Follow the printed music as the teacher sings the song. Can you see the notes ascending, descending and repeating?
  • Use your hand to show the shape of the ascending, descending and repeated notes of the song as the teacher sings. Can students sing the song and show the shape of the note movement at the same time? (Hint: wait to try this until the song is well internalized.)
  • There is an accidental added in this song. Discuss how the accidental affects the notes in bar 9.

Performance suggestions


Adding an umbrella as a prop is a lovely way to add visual interest to a performance. Bring the open umbrella to the stage and then place it next to the singer(s). The umbrella adds colour but the singer is free to concentrate on the performance. Include Umbrellas in a weather-themed concert presentation.

Umbrellas

I was asked to write a song for young singers. The melody needed to be simple, both rhythmically and melodically and I could choose any topic I wished. Sometimes having a wide-open set of options can be daunting! However, I know that when my grandchildren visit me, they love to go outside with an umbrella and enjoy the rainy day. I crafted my song while thinking about how lovely rain is when the right gear is available. I like walking in the rain with an umbrella, and adding a pair of rubber boots means there are also puddles to explore. (Boots and puddles are included in a different rainy day song!) I enjoy the smell of rain as it waters the plants in my garden. I also like the sound of rain on the roof of my house. All in all, umbrellas, raincoats and rubber boots mean that a rainy day can be enjoyed as an exciting adventure.

It is fantastic for school and vocal studio spring concerts with young singers.

This three-verse song has a different first line for each verse, with the remainder of the song repeating the same lyrics. This provides a light “lyric load” for young performers. Students love the “meow and woof” lyrics of the second verse (easy lyrics to remember) and the chance to add theatrical “flair” to their presentation. The song works well with the addition of actions, helping young singers remember the words and adding visual interest.

The pleasant melody is melodically interesting while staying within a 6th (D4-B5), easily falling within the vocal range of young singers.

This song includes an in-depth rhythm activity. Younger students can identify quarter and eighth note elements using fun animal rhythm cards (templates provided). The cards can also be used for reading rhythms, rhythm dictation and composing.

Teacher Tips

Add actions to the song to help students remember the lyrics and to create visual interest in the concert setting.

Students love being able to “meow and woof” the lyrics of the second verse. Soloists may also be assigned the meow and woof sections to show off their “theatrical talents”.

Use the rhythm cards provided with It’s Raining Cats and Dogs for rhythm activities.

  • Review simple quarter note/eighth note rhythm combinations
  • Have students use the rhythm cards to create their own rhythm combinations. They are composing!
  • Have students listen to a rhythm that is being clapped and then use the rhythm cards to create the rhythm.
  • Combine students in small groups to create longer rhythm combinations. Have them write their compositions on a piece of paper and share them with others in the class. Put all the group compositions together in one BIG class composition. Clap the rhythms that have been created, or read them using rhythm duration syllables. For a bit of cat and dog fun, read the rhythms using meows and woofs.

Expressive Singing

Follow the markings in It’s Raining Cats and Dogs and sing expressively.

The mood of this song is optimistic. The singer is hoping to find lots of cats and dogs AND be able to keep the ones that are collected!

Many instructions in music scores are written in Italian and German. These are standard music terms used in music created by composers around the world regardless of the language they normally speak.

Students will need to understand the following Italian instructions:

  • molto rit. – slowing down a lot (molto = much)
  • rit. – gradually slow down
  • a tempo – back to the original tempo (at tempo)
  • Fermata – hold or pause. The length of the pause is up to the performer, but a standard length for the hold is twice the value of the note with the fermata. (You may discuss how a “pause” in a song about dogs and cats with “paws” is a funny play on words!)

Encourage solo singers to add theatrical flair in bar 25, where you see the instruction to “sigh” during the rest (use the extra quarter beat created by the fermata). This can be a tired or loving sigh, or any emotion you wish to convey; or it can even be a theatrical “meow” or “woof”. The singer may add their own interpretation as they wish.

For fun, sing the whole song using only “woof” or “meow” and/or use a variety of woof/meow combinations.

Props and Presentation

Students may wish to add a few props to add visual interest to their performance. Some suggestions are:

  • Hold an empty box while singing, or place it on the floor as a visual prop.
  • Hold a toy dog or cat during the performance. (A prop can also be a helpful “security item” for a shy singer to hold onto for support if they are nervous about performing.)
  • Use face paint to create dog and cat faces for your group performance.
  • Add a few colourful umbrellas for a “splash” of colour.

Add actions to the song to enhance the concert or recital presentation. A list of suggested actions is included on page 10 of the PDF document.

It's Raining Cats and Dogs

There are many phrases that we use in our conversations that could be confusing to those who take us literally. Phrases like, “I have a frog in my throat,” or “I’m so hungry I could eat a horse,” might need some explaining! “It’s raining cats and dogs” is one of those expressions and it stuck in my imagination as worth investigating with my composer’s point of view. If one takes this phrase literally, and if one also likes cats and dogs, this might seem to be a perfect opportunity to bypass the usual parental permission to get a pet; just go outside with a box and scoop up what you want!

I jotted down the idea for the opening phrase and repeated it (that makes it easy to learn!) and the melody followed quickly. The rest of the song worked its way along with melody and lyrics coming together. Many times natural accents of the language of the lyrics dictate how the melody will go and in turn, the melody line starts to define how many syllables will fit into the phrase. The second verse I wrote expanded a bit on cat and dog characteristics: their fur and claws, their tails and paws. By repeating the last section of the song, it allowed me to write a complete verse without so many words for a young singer to learn.

I knew my students were going to LOVE singing this song when I thought of adding the verse where they get to meow and woof for the lyrics. I inserted this as a second verse and suddenly I had a three-verse song! When I introduced the song, my students had a great time debating the merits of cats and dogs. There were very stalwart fans on both sides of the fence and some who couldn’t decide and put some of both in their imaginary box. We added actions, we sang the meows and woofs with great theatrical affectation, and the premiere performance (at our school spring concert) was a hit with our delighted audience.

I have not yet written any songs about the frogs and the horses I mentioned earlier, but you never know when inspiration is going to arrive, and when it does I will “strike while the iron is hot” and get a song written!
