Get Up Christmas Mornin'

I was taking my son to a Scout Jamboree in Cavendish, Prince Edward Island, Canada. 14,000 Scouts from all over Canada were converging at a massive camp site for a week-long event. As we were heading to the camp on a bright and sunny day, the melody and the first verse of the song popped into my head. I started to sing as we walked from the parking lot to the central gathering location (it was quite a hike so I had some time!) My son has camped in some pretty uncomfortable weather conditions. He always had lots of stories to tell, but he really didn’t complain about the weather. He seemed to enjoy the challenge of surviving even rainy and snowy camping trips. He didn’t get that from his mother. I prefer to be protected from heat, cold, bugs and hard ground when I sleep. Despite my personal preference to avoid being involved in bad weather, I thought it made sense to include the advice not to be saucy to Mother Nature. At the end of the day, being grumpy doesn’t change the weather conditions but a good attitude can go a long way to improving the outlook of the situation.

A few years later, our Donna & Andy duo was invited to sing at a Christmas event. We were practicing some standard seasonal tunes when we started to change the lyrics of Get Up in the Mornin’ to fit in with getting up on Christmas morning. We sketched out alternate lyrics that worked for that concert and I include them with the original words so teachers can have an option for school and vocal studio Christmas concert presentations. The admonishment not to be grumpy or sassy also works in the context of staying off the naughty list!

Lyric options

Two options for lyrics are provided for line two of verse three.
Decide if you want to sing about a pirate with a sword, or if you prefer to have the pirate sleeping.
The teacher may make this decision before introducing the song, and two separate lyric sheets are provided to accommodate this lyric choice. It is also an option to have the students vote on their preference.

Performance suggestions

Add simple props – striped shirts, bandanas, toy parrots and fake tattoos (An eyeliner is a great tool for creating temporary tattoos).

Include special pirate “soloists” to present the spoken response, “To the sea!” Invite soloists to give different interpretations of the “to the sea!” response.

Composer's Notes

Some songs seem to “arrive” without much fuss. This is one of those songs. I don’t remember what sparked my imagination and got me started writing, but it was a simple process to include all the clichés associated with pirates as I wrote lyrics for the verses. It is great fun to include participatory bits in a song that I know the students will love to sing. The exuberant call, “To the sea!” is that kind of fun element that draws kids into the singing experience. Often the songs I write reflect the fact that I am the mother of three energetic boys. If I could write lyrics and keep my own three livewires interested, it was a good indication of how it would go for the general child population that eventually sings my songs.

The recording process for this song was also a blast. Our Donna & Andy recordings have all been recorded using the talents of the best musicians we can find. It’s a Pirate’s Life for Me was recorded for the CD: Bue Skies and Pirates, with lots of blues and jazz influenced tunes. The “heavyweights” we hired to record our tracks were high-end, well-known jazz musicians and musical monsters who are able to play with incredible skill. We took courage in hand and requested each of these highly respected musicians to add a spoken response, “to the sea!” to include on this track. At first, we thought nobody would agree, but as each musician contributed their pirate interpretation, their inner child became very evident. As the voices started accumulating, efforts were made to stand out in the group of voices. they tried to be louder, they laughed at each other, they asked to re-do their part if they thought they could do a better take. They were silly, they were earnest and they had fun!

There are a variety of emotions associated with the lyrics in this song. There are sections where the singer is remorseful, other sections where they are surprised and impressed, and still others where there must be sincere concern and apologies offered. The two opening verses are light and bouncy in a major key. The next section is legato and the lyrics are more reflective. Best Friends

I grew up in a small rural community with a population of less than 200 people. Fortunately for me, next door to our house was a family with seven children, the youngest of whom was my best friend. She was a year younger than I was, but once we were old enough to play together we were together at her house or at mine, kicking about on our family farm, or riding our bicycles in her dad’s paved store yard. The scenarios used in Best Friends are drawn from real events that occurred as our two families grew up together. The only “poetic license” I manipulated was the verse about the bees. Although we didn’t encounter swarms of bees, there were other injuries that resulted during our adventures. We also didn’t end up at the emergency department for many of the scrapes we received. Farm kids are often tough and the nearest emergency department was a 40-minute drive away. The bull turned out to be a curious steer, and no real threat to us. The mud was actually a hole in a barn floor (with a drop to the basement below) and my best friend’s brother taunted my older sister that she couldn’t jump over the hole. She assured him she could and she jumped. Unfortunately he was right and she was wrong and she landed on the concrete floor one floor below. Fortunately there were no injuries! I consider myself to have had an idyllic childhood. We worked hard on the farm but we also found time to play. There were swings my dad tied to large branches of oak and maple trees along the edge of our lawn. We rode bikes, played “Kick the Can”, had a few croquet tournaments, climbed trees, made forts, combed the ditches for glass pop bottles that could be returned to the store for 5 cents each, and a brook where we played even though our parents had told us not to play there. Best friends made all those activities that much more fun and it was worth every scrape, every adventure and every apology!

Singin’ the Blues

Traditionally, blues songs are often “hurting” songs. Adults who sing in this genre sing about losing their girlfriend, their truck, and their dog (which always seems to have run away for some reason). It is often raining, someone is in jail, and “Momma” often shows up as a character in the sad story that is being told.

Children enjoy singing the scoops and slides and experiencing the feel of a blues song. However, most of the lyrics are not age-appropriate! I decided to write a song from the perspective of a child. There are events in the day of a child that cause a child concern or grief. Anyone who has taken their bike out for a spin and ended up sailing over the handlebars and skinning their knees (and hands, face and many other body parts as well!) will know that this is surely a reason to “sing the blues”. Chewing bubble gum can be great fun. Learning to blow bubbles is a skill that many children are motivated to master. Along with blowing those bubbles comes the inevitable collapse of the bubble resulting in a face that becomes a sticky mess. In the third verse, even though their dog has not run away, the singer is too young to own a pickup truck and nobody sends them any mail, so they are still “singin’ the blues”.

When we recorded this song for our Donna & Andy CD, Blue Skies and Pirates, we hired some very fine blues players from Halifax, Nova Scotia. They played our track with the same style and nuances one would hear played by any blues band playing for adults in any bar in the city. The authentic feel of the song is delightful, and children love the opportunity to sing along and air their grievances while singin’ the blues!

I’d Rather be a Bear

I had made plans to run some errands, but the day was cold and snowy. As I looked out the window I debated whether or not it was worth venturing out into the cold or if I should wait for a different, and hopefully warmer, day. I wondered if it was an option to avoid the cold completely by staying in my nice, warm house until spring arrived. Hmmm. Bears get to do that! They go to sleep in the fall when the weather starts to get cold, they sleep all winter, and they wake up in the lovely spring weather. If a bear is awakened from its winter sleep, it might be grumpy and nobody says, “Stop being a grump!” It is just accepted as a characteristic of their personality. Bears also get to eat all summer and get fat – on purpose! And they get to wear a lovely fur coat wherever they go. Seems to me, a bear has a pretty good life! This wintery thought process inspired the song, I’d Rather be a Bear.

The recording process brought another fun element to this song. The sung phrase, “I’d rather be a bear” is echoed by a spoken response. Andy and I had a great time thinking of different ways to do the echoes. We thought about recording multiple tracks and changing our voices each time to create a group response. Then we had a super idea! We had 8-10 musicians lined up to play on the recording to create our band backing tracks. As each instrumental musician came into the studio, we requested that they would say the line, “I’d rather be a bear” so we could record it and add the voices together to create our group of bears. At first, the musicians were hesitant, but once they started adding their “bear voice impersonations” they had a blast trying to make their bear voice sound different than everyone else’s. You can hear the end result in the Donna & Andy performance track for I’d Rather be a Bear. It turned out to be one of our favourite tracks on the Blue Skies and Pirates CD.

I Got a Sister (but I wanted a dog)

I usually try to be positive in my songs. I don’t have much time for, or interest in, wallowing in negativity. When it comes to the subject of siblings, there are lots of stories about wonderful family memories, but there are also lots of times when those beloved siblings irritate us more than just about anyone else we know! Why is it that the people we love can also be the most irritating?

I am the happy middle child, growing up with two older sisters until I was five, and then welcoming a brother, followed by a baby sister. As siblings go, we got along well. Nobody messed with our oldest sister early in the morning (or we learned to dodge the inevitable shoe that would head in our direction!) If you wanted someone to go looking for new kittens in the barn, my second oldest sister was the person to recruit. For climbing trees and riding bikes and tricycles, my younger siblings were the ones to volunteer for the job.

I didn’t like being bossed around by my older sisters who knew EVERYTHING. I didn’t mind stepping into the boss role when I was put in charge of my younger brother and sister. I guess where one is in the pecking order can have a lot to do with one’s satisfaction or unhappiness in any given situation.

There is lots of great angst floating around with regard to sibling relationships. Song lyrics were just begging to be written on this subject. I wrote I Got a Sister (but I wanted a dog) as a perspective of an only child, or at least one of the older children in the family. I know that children often request a pet, and a puppy is such a wonderful addition to a family. What if a child asked for a playmate, waited expectantly for a puppy to arrive, and then received the shock of being introduced to a new baby sister instead? Horrors! I imagined things that would be fun to do with a dog that a sister would certainly not be interested in doing. Playing in the mud or rolling over and playing dead would probably not cut it. Then there are all the deepest, darkest secrets that can be told to a dog, with absolute confidence that those secrets would never be used against you!

As I wrote the blues style music for my song, we worked with Greg Simm, a fine guitar player and walking encyclopedia when it came to musical styles. He suggested that, although the tone of the lyrics was one of complaining about the sister arriving, we really didn’t mean the song to be dark and negative. The chords he added were often open fifths for the Tonic/home chord so it wasn’t strongly a minor sound, but had an openness to the sound. We utilized jazz scoops and slides for the melody and created our blues feel for the song.

At the end of the day, I Got a Sister (but I wanted a dog) captures the pique of a child wishing for a dog and not being impressed with the stand-in playmate sister that is presented. There is enough humour and lightness included to know that it is good natured grumbling, and really more about wanting the dog than about not wanting the sister. Perhaps if both had arrived things would be different!

I want to conclude my notes with a disclaimer. My younger sister has commented that she is not impressed with the perspective presented in this song. She has good-naturedly suggested it is a personal insult and she presumes it is autobiographical. I want to go on record as denying, 100%, that this song was based on any kind of actual fact. Sometimes a composer must take poetic license and use the imagination to write a song. I assure you (and my sister) that this is the case for this song. As they say in the movies,

“The characters and incidents in this song are fictitious and any similarity to the name, character or history of any known individual is entirely coincidental.”

Also, “No sisters and no dogs were harmed during the making of this song!”
