Pumpkins are ripe and ready to be turned into Jack-o’-lanterns. Costumes are being prepared for Halloween trick or treating excursions.
Music activities that reflect these October activities are filled with opportunities for expressive singing and dramatizations, discussion about costumes, and some fun singing games that spark the imagination of young singers.
I have four favourite songs that I regularly use in my music classroom at this time of year. This five-song collection includes four traditional favourites and one original song  (Jack-o’-lantern) to add to your Halloween song library. There are also a few suggestions for non-Halloween lyrics.

Donna has composed Dark Night Sky, a song with new, original lyrics using the melody of Ghost of John. Now teachers can use this well-loved minor melody at any time of the year. Donna's suggests planning four classes of instruction time for Dark Night Sky to build a soundscape using melodic and rhythmic ostinati.
Donna's piano accompaniment/arrangement can be used interchangeably with both Dark Night Sky and Ghost of John, extending this Halloween favourite to a musical activity for use at any time of the year.
